Highlands Community Bank runs on the belief that the communities in the Alleghany Highlands deserve a bank that prioritizes local decision-making that keeps money in the community. For years, we’ve strived to help businesses grow and individuals flourish, celebrating their successes every step of the way.

In April, Highlands Community Bank had the humbling experience of celebrating our own success at the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards. It was an honor to be named Business of the Year, especially after a historic year for business and finance.

“Winning the Business of the Year award provides a credible third-party endorsement for your company, opens doors for new contact and potential business,” said Teresa Hammond, Executive Director. “Employees can take pride in the award which boosts morale and motivation.”

Criteria used to determine award recipient include:

  • job creation
  • business advocacy
  • economic community impact
  • innovation in product and service
  • community involvement

While 2020 was an especially trying year for the Bank, our incredible team stayed focused on our promise to our community, continued serving in the best ways we could, and worked hard to keep the doors of businesses open and paychecks coming home to friends and neighbors.

“In March of 2020, when most of the Alleghany Highlands and the world for that matter were reeling from a deadly virus, and its devastating effects on the economy. This financial institution began an undertaking unlike anything they’ve done before,” adds Hammond. “The PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) became their primary focus. It’s hard to say how many businesses would have closed had it not been for these loans. They helped not only corporations but sole proprietors such as hairdressers, restaurant owners, lawn care people, and mechanics.”

From day one, we have recognized and lived up to our responsibilities as a financial institution to make an impact and invest in the communities we serve. To Highlands Community Bank, the work we did in the last year was simply business as usual.

This was award was an incredible honor that we never would have achieved without the dedicated employees we’re so lucky to have on our team.
